TWO

When the ax is laid to the stem of the tree
New shoots grow from the fallen leaves
Rain clouds wash the growing clean
And two draw life where one had been.

When the spirit of man waits for rebirth
Like the trust that green things have in the earth
Love is the wind that brings the spring
That wakes two souls from their slumbering.
